Photo of the week 2014 – Week six
Looking for this weeks ‘Photo of the Week‘, the one thing that jumped out was the number of photos with friends.
As a photographer, and I use the term in the loosest sense possible, every time I travel with someone I often walk off taking photos of anything but them. I don’t know why but I’ve always been drawn to the unknown, and I guess that’s reflected in my photography.
However, when I went back to Thailand in 2009, I met up with a number of friends, and apparently I took lots of photos of them. Who’d have thought it?
Anyway, I was extremely fortunate and thankful that a number of friends came out to see me on my round the world trip, and they don’t come better than Alex Blake, the first person to come out (and see me that is as opposed to any other type of coming out).
At the time I was travelling with Matt, the guy who I’d started my round the world trip with. Alex, Matt and I all grew up together causing trouble on the streets of Essex, so we didn’t have to worry about having fun or getting along; it was already guaranteed.
One of the things that we decided to do together was ‘An English Gentleman‘.
Basically, as you can see in the photo, we’d dress up in a dress shirt, black waist coat and black bow tie. In essence, we tried to look like a proper English gentleman. People we’re instantly attracted – “Why are you dressed up like that?” “Where are you from?” “What’s your name?”
I think the reason why we did it was to attract attention, to break down cultural barriers to show people us Brits weren’t as boring as we’d been labelled (I know, we’ve been accused of worse, right?)
Looking back at it, I could say we were trying to be different, that we were trying to find our own path, but I think we all know I’d be lying.
Instead, as this photo shows, as do all my other photos of Thailand with countless other friends, we were just trying to have some fun, and we really did…
